Guide to RRU Library services for Alumni

Alumni library cards

The Library is pleased to offer a free library card to alumni of both the Royal Roads Military College and Royal Roads University.

    • 4-week borrowing period for books from our regular collection
    • Books can be renewed if not requested by other borrowers
    • Alumni cards can be renewed every year
    • Note that AV material, periodicals, and reserve items cannot be checked out

To request an alumni library card, please visit us in person or email LRC.Notices@royalroads.ca. You will be asked to provide proof of your alumni status and a piece of ID with your current address.

Not in Victoria?

As an alumni cardholder, get books mailed from RRU Library to any address within Canada for a fee of $10.00 per request. Learn more about this service: http://library.royalroads.ca/document-delivery.

Access to online resources

Remote access to the library databases ceases 30 days after you have completed the last class in your program of study.

You still have lots of options available to you for accessing scholarly literature, though! More and more scholarly material is being made openly available. Check out our guide on open-access scholarly resources to learn more about conducting effective research without a library subscription.

Why can't the Library provide alumni database access?

We'd like to! Unfortunately, academic libraries are, generally, contractually unable to provide this access to alumni. Publishers license content to us at a discounted educational rate, and are therefore highly interested in making sure use of this content is limited to educational rather than commercial purposes. Typically, the way they ensure this is to strictly prohibit the use of our databases by anyone other than current students, staff, and faculty. An analogous model is the educational pricing vs. 'regular' pricing for various software which is also only available to you when you're a university student.
