7th edition of APA Style manual

The American Psychological Association will be launching the 7th edition of the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association in October. It’s been 10 years since they released the 6th edition, and the new edition provides many updates, including:

  • More information on how students can apply the style rules to their academic works, including information on common types of student writing, such as annotated bibliographies, theses, and dissertations (American Psychological Association, 2020, p. xviii); a sample student title page (p. xix); and a sample student paper (p. xix).
  • “The singular ‘they’ is endorsed, consistent with inclusive usage” (p. xix).
  • One space after the period that ends a sentence unless requested otherwise (p. xx).

For a full description of what’s new in the 7th edition, please visit “Introduction”.

The move to a new edition of a style manual involves a transition period until most Royal Roads students are using the new edition. For example, if programs direct students to use the edition that was current when their programs started, some students may be using the 6th edition manual into 2021. Students starting programs after October will likely use the 7th edition of the style manual, but there may be exceptions. If you are a Royal Roads student or instructor, and you’re unsure of which edition to use, please contact your program office for clarification.

The Writing Centre’s APA Style resources will be updated as quickly as possible, and we will support both the 6th and 7th editions until October 2021. The Royal Roads bookstore will start selling the 7th edition as soon as stock is available; please direct any questions regarding book orders to Colleen McGonigal, manager, Bookstore and Library front desk.

Please contact the Writing Centre if you have questions as we’d be happy to assist you.
